Clicking noise from yet undefined part... ideas?

I'm curious if anyone has had, or knows about, the following problem;

Symptoms;
- When I accelerate (any gear), I can hear a clicking sound, wich can also be heard when releasing the throttle, or braking.
- It doesn't occur when steering (unless you ac/decelerate or brake).
- It can be reproduced every time I 'want', just by pressing the throttle (click), releasing it (another click), then braking or accelerating will both give the same click (same sound volume every time).
- It's heard at lower as well as higher speeds.

First of all; the joints on the inside and outside of the axle, are called CV joints in English?? (we call them homokineet... doesn't sound like what you use by far ;) ), if not, when you see 'CV joints' in this post, I mean those bearing-things on both ends of your axles...

I know that this could be a symptom of worn CV joints, but I've tried several times to accelerate/drive when steering 100% to the left and right, going in circles... no ticking noise.

I checked the upper and lower ball joints (sorry, forgot what those are called in English :( :( ), and there is no float to them, shocks behave normal as well, and the springs aren't cracked... motor mounts are good and tightened, wheel bearings seem okay, had some work done to this side of the car, but had the problem before and after.
Haven't checked the swaybar tho.

I just can't think of anything else anymore... so; anybody??

Your sig is pretty huge, can you please resize it according to the guidelines?

My 96 civic has been making the exact same noise since I put a manual tranny in it. Sometimes when starting from a dead stop (usually after reversing) or after i stop moving forward and go in reverse to back into the garage I always hear it. When up on jackstands, there is some play when I rotate the wheel when the tranny is in gear. It turns freely a tiny bit then "locks or catches" (not really but that's the best way to describe it) and starts to rotate the transmission gears. When it "catches" it makes a click or more of a high pitch clunk - similar sound to when you put a set of rotors on the front hubs, kind of a metal on metal "clank"
It sounds like it is coming from the outer CV joint area, but there is no clicking when I turn with the wheel al the way to the left or right.

So I can't help you but maybe you're not the only one with this mystery click sound. Yours sounds like it is happening alot more than mine though, which makes me wonder if it is indeed a CV joint wearing out :headscratch:

Not quiet sure what it could be, but i know on my front left rim sumtime's 1 lug nut gets loose, and i hear a clunking noise, but its usually when i am not accelerating...i always tightin it back up but for sum reason it used to keep getting loose, not no more though

Really sounds like what teal described, I hope it isn't the main bearing in the tranny :weee:

well cv's( constant velocity axles) or just axles lol, have two joints i believe when the outer one goes bad it will make noise when turnning the wheels. but perhaps the inner joint in the axle is bad since it only piviots with suspension movment or accelleration. :wink:

It probably is, man. After I blew up my EX trans I had for my D15B I picked up a CX trans that my friend had laying around. Little did he tell me and once it was on it was making all kinds of noises. He then proceeeded to tell me "Oh hey, the main bearing is going out in that tranny." :x Motherf#@*er lol.
But don't worry. If that is what it is, it's not going to hurt anything for a long time. It will just make a bunch of noise.

Nice friends you've got man :P

Today, after coming home from school, I jacked up the right side of the car, and tried to re-tighten all nuts and bolts, checked everything that has bolts or nuts on them for play, removed the rotor and caliper and checked again, but everything was tight as it should be.

Even under the hood, re-tightened all four nuts from the shocks, and all 4 bolts for the upper joint that are beside it.
Also checked the airfilter, and re-tightened the nuts on the upper strutbar.
I could re-tighten a few bolts/nuts, but nothing was loose that much that it could have caused the noise IMO... now it's dark, and I'll go for a spin tomorrow, see if it helped :s
If not, I'm out of ideas :?

Maybe a bad engine mount. Check the rear mount and the lower front mounts. Use a jack to light the motor independently of the chassis.

These were replaced about two weeks ago by DIY solid engine mounts, so all of them are checked, and tightened.
The problem existed before, and afterwards.

BTW, the clutch was changed, flywheel as well incl. bearings and the lot, so everything has been loose and re-tightened, the problem existed before and after all that work.
