Car wouldn't start ---> Electrical gremlin?

Hi everyone,

First of all, forgive my ignorance as I didn't know which forum to post this in.

I had some trouble starting my car last night. Went to my gf's house to pick her up. I waited in the car for about 3 minutes with the radio on as usual. When I tried to start the car, it totally went dead. Nothing worked; lights, hazards, radio, etc. It's like the battery was suddenly and completely disconnected from the battery. Luckily, I was on a little bit of a hill so I was able to push start it.

We drove around for about 5 minutes 'till I pulled over to try to recreate it. I made sure to do so on a hill just in case it wasn't a fluke the first time around. Sure enough, it wasn't a fluke, but this time I couldn't push start. I was on a bigger hill and had more momentum than earlier that evening. Ignition was in and I dropped the clutch fast enough to ensure the car would start. Absolutely nothing. I rolled along WITH the clutch engaged and there was nothing.

As we waited for my brother to come along and jump my car, it suddenly came back to life. Everything seemed normal. I started my car and I was on my way. I can't explain it.

Anyone here have any thoughts?

First I'd look at the battery terminals. Make sure there is no corrosion and that the clamps are tight on the posts.

Thanks for the replies. I checked the battery and it's tightly connected. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a car CAN run without a battery can't it? I mean, as long as the alternator is providing electricity, the battery is not needed to *run* the car. As far as I know, the battery is there to provide electricity when the engine isn't running. If so, it doesn't explain why I couldn't start the car while rolling. What would prevent a manual car from starting from a roll if the ignition is on and the clutch is engaged?

I would personally say its down to bad ground man i agree ive jumped a few cars without a battery to move them around the yard but if you get bad earth and it keeps making and breaking connection it would react like that

sorry cant help more man!
