Well my car has been smelling stale for about 6 months now, smells like dead something. I pretty much done the following

vacuumed
washed the seat covers
left the windows open over night and all day
used different perfumes, deodorant
cleaned the air con ducts and fan

after all that it still smelt the same, and I found out what it was
About 6 pairs of used socks near the spare tyre.. :\

Have you pulled up the back seat and checked for water, it can pool up under there if the sunroof drain is clogged or broken. What about your spare tire area?

Problem is fixed, but I haven't looked under the seat though,... car smells good now
