High Mileage Worries, Need Answers

The myth is that

High Mileage = More flimsy chassis, worn out engine, etc.

Of course it depends. A high mileage car doesn't particularly mean rust, it just means one drives alot. Doing my homework, (research) a car with high mileage but is used alot on the highway is not as bad as average mileage so to speak city driving car due to details which I wont get into.

What I want to know is, what is the downside of a high mileage car? What gets worn on an old high mileage car? What should I replace? What should I do?

Usually suspension components like struts are worn. Some may need tires. It all depends on who owned the car and the maintenance they kept on it. A good look over of the vehicle will determine if it was well maintained or not, as well as what may need to be replaced.

meh.. EG's aren't broken in till they got a good 150-200k on them :lol:



my shell i know has 200,000++ but just about every bit of suspension and bushings have been replaced.. but the body definitely shows her age..

my motor has at minimum 150,000 miles. it's completely BONE STOCK internally and sees 10+ psi every time i drive it :D that's also why i got a back-up motor sittin in the garage :lol:


if this is a new car you've picked up.. do a few simple easy things that most people would never do like change the fuel filter, clean your IAC, PCV, etc.

pretty much all the cons of high milage are mentioned above. chances are if you are buying a cheap high milage car its been passed around as a beater and people tend to skip out on alot of maintenance (timing belt, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, bushings, aswell as fixing fluid leaks)

Just be careful what you buy make sure you look over everything very carefully and do not overpay. and don't believe people when they say oh the car doesn't run right now it just needs a [insert random part here] its like a $5 part i just dont have the time and dont wanna deal with it i just want rid of the car.

If its something like a fuel filter then spend $5 at wally world and take it with you and put it on and then ask mr mechanic why the car doesnt start
