All 1988-2000 D Series transmissions are compable with eachother, You can bolt a 2000 d16y8 to a 1988 cable d series tranmission.

If you want it in your EG, Any 1992 to 2000 d series transmision will work. The 1996 to 2000 D Series Transmissions(the S40's) have stronger internals then a 1992-1995(s20) Transmission.

Also when you pick it up, look by the differental and make sure it say "B000" that means its an EX Short geared transmission. If it has "A000" it is a longer geared transmission.

just the shift forks are different, other parts are the same.
btw, if you are worried about bending or breaking shift forks, you should probably be driving an auto.
