F20B Trans Items???

Anyone have any idea what this is?
I'm assuming its something that should have sort of a breather filter on it like a cooler of some sort? Should it be connected or is it not entirely important.
Researched but couldn't find anything...

Every image i've seen from my google-fu of this motor/trans installed has that hole open.

There's a little rubber boot that goes on there, L shaped with an arrow on it. It's supposed to face forward. The repair manual has you turn it during certain procedures, I have no freaking idea why.

Thats a transmission breather. No filter but should have a rubber cap as stated. All tranny's should have a cap, not sure if my D series trans is l-shaped but have seen it like that. I have also seen people refill the rans from that point cause supposedly its easier with a funnel.

Heres the same spot on D series trans. Don't mind the mess, accidently spilled oil before making a long trip and still need to clean it up.
