accelerating through first gear my transmission will at first sound smooth then it will start whining after about3500 rpm. the whining will continue through all gears. also if the car is at idle it makes a slight knocking noise until i engage the clutch then its gone!! any ideas. im hopin its just a bad clutch. oh and its a stock si tranny.

If you put the clutch in and the noise goes away, then it definetally is the bearing. The Above link should help.

Sounds like it is time to add some saw dust.... and then trade the car.

mainshaft or "throw-out" bearing we call it up nort'. if clutch is enganged and the noise goes away its definitely it. also, if its bad enough to be whining above 3500rpm, its really bad.. but i think you should check and see if you've got any trans fluid first, it sounds like it could be down a bunch as well.
