#216798 When I first start my car the idle shoots up to like 2,000 RPMS and will eventually go down to like 1,000ish. While the car is warming up it will idle very randomly, like dip around a lot. If its not to much to ask could you guys give me some help and an estimate on how much and how hard the work to fix it is?

#216799 typically i think idle problems like that are associated with air in the coolant system. There is a bleeder valve on the inlet to get the air out of your system.

#216805 Here a trouble shoot procedure from a fellow D16z6 for idle issue owner..

When u start the car cold generally it goes to 1800 rpms and gradually comes down to about 850 right below the 1000 mark.

If your idle dips up and down after warm up, check the coolant system for air like the guy above mentioned.. with the engince already warm use a 12mm wrench to loosen the bleeder at the top radiator hose. if all air is out coolant should shoot straight up in a steady stream or pour right over the bleeder screw. if air is in the system u will see steam come out followed by a few bursts of coolant until it's a steady coolant coming out.
That takes care of that.

Now if you Idle tends to stay anywhere above 1500+ rpms. it's caused by a few things,
!. Stuck throttle cable, but this is no typial doesnt happen often...

2. Fast Idle Valve attached to the bottom your Throttle body where one small coolant hose connects to it.

3. Idle air Cotrol Valcve Needs replacing or a good cleaning. That's located behind the Intake manifold. air intake cleaner usually fixes this part.

Part #2 if it's not functioning properly then it needs to get replaced completely. It's a $50 new at the dealer..

Hope this helps u out more.. and good luck any more questions feel free to ask that's why we are here!!

#216820 It only dips around while its warming up like when I got to school in the morning I go about a block and a half at about 20 MPH right after I start it cold and its dipping around between 2000-1000. I go get on the bypass and go 8 blocks at 40-50 MPH and by the time a park its down to normal, around 800ish. It doesn't stay high after its warmed up. So about 5-8 minutes it warms up and is fine. How hard is it to take the IACV off and clean it like on a scale from 1-10 where changing the oil is about a 2 or 3?

Sounds like the fast idle valve to me....

to take the IACV is about a 2. Just 2 12mm bolts hold it in place. cleaning just spray the shit out of it with Carb spray or throttle body cleaner. you will see a ll circled screen spray that part really good.

Try that then let me know if it's fixed. See then you say it's fine after warm up. so it only does it at cold start. that's typically the IACV malfunctoning.do yu have any check engine lights at all?. ...

#216827 and anther thing. let the car warm up properly about 3-5 minutes before you start driving. it's just not good to take off on a cold engine..
By Clarkypoo
#216839 I guess I should say its fine once the engine is running for a while, it can be 95 degrees out and it still does it. It does seem like it does it worse when its colder out.

#216842 P.S. Can you post a picture of the valve, I don't know where it is lol

#216850 well i dont have a picture.. and for some reason was unable to find one. But assuming you know what your intake manifold is, it bolds right to the back of that (facing your firewall). There are two bolts that hold it on as was mentioned. It will have two coolant lines going to it along with a plug on the driver right (facing the engine bay from the front of the car). If you just peek over your manifold you cannot miss it.

EDIT: found a pic. Just get some carb cleaner and spray it really well. Make sure you bleed your system after. As you can see the coolant lines will come up from the bottom so you may not see them. But there is nothing else around it so you will know if you see it (aside i guess from the tb, which bolts to the side of the intake).

#216853 Would you bleed it with the bolt they were talking about earlier? Like the one that sprays out coolant and steam?

#216855 yep. thats the one.

#216857 Okay I'm going to try and clean it tomorrow. Should I just spray in those 2 holes. Anything that I definitely should not do. Cause a new one from Auto Zone is $225..

#216859 yes spray the holes really well. i dont think theres an easy way to hurt the thing, so no worries there. It wouldnt hurt to make sure the cleaner has evporated before you bolt it on, but i dont even think that matters too much.

#216862 Fast Idle valve

Look at this picture. See the under my blue hose connected to my intake. See te little blak hose connced to the bottom of the Throttle body, that's your fast idle valve. it's bolted onto the TB by 3 10mm bolts.

#216908 Fast Idle Thermo Valve. I made a thread about this a little while back.

http://civic-eg.com/viewtopic.php?p=187578#187578

This would also only be the problem if the idle is going up and down. If it's just staying high, there's probably a vacuum leak somewhere. Check every single vacuum line to make sure there aren't any leaks or cracks.
