what would be the absolute best frankenstien d-series do you think?i have heard of alot of combo's i wana stay wit my sohc no metter what cause i know it sounds stupid buit i dot like b-series and cant afford a k lol. my z6 is awesome but you always want more lol

well ive always been partial to the dohc zc but thats really for thsoe who like 2 cams and boost really since its a motor that likes boost lol....

ive done a d15b2 with a z6 head ported n polished and shaved a bit and it was sweet till the rings went....

in my thoughts and research in order to really get good numbers you can either boost, or spend a fair bit o cash on a high compression build your transmission of choice however is easy id suggest a ex/si or better yet get a dx/cx/lxtrans for a couple gears and a ex si trans and mix and match to make a trans with both great acceleration and good top speed.....and gas mileage....since i do find the ex/si trans needs a sixth gear lol i originally had a cx trans and that was sweet for gas but accelleration with the z6 i had bolted up to it was ok at best....my friend hatchie easily pulled away in his all stock dx hatch tho it could also of been due to the number of horsepowers he had due to his mileage the mileage of my z6 was unknown but yea.....

if you wish to do a semi high compression id suggest locateing a D15 or D16a6 block building it up with possibly zc pistons (P29) and bolting up the z6 head....maybe with a cam in it as well...and some mild porting and such should be a good start for obtaining power.

if you wish to go boost i may suggest getting rid of vtec but thats just me i dont really like the b series like you do but i also dont really like the vtec either.....so id either look for a D15b7 or b2 sohc non vtec dx lx motor or a DOHC ZC....pick up a small turbo t25 possibly off a 2nd gen dsm or maybe a volvo turbo and get a hf/vx/cx/std manifold and either make an adapter plate or get a adapter plate that someone else made .....and depending if you want to or not id get a intercooler you really dont need to but to be honest you dont need to run a intercooler but its recommended lol....but yea

all depends on what kind of power your looking to make if you want to go n/a or turbo etc. im possibly going ot the b series however im still on the fence about the whole thing since i really dont like the idea that i have to pay almost 300x more for a 5spd trans lol than i do a dseries trans which i can pick up for no more than $100 and thats really pushing it ive picked up a few ex/si trans for less than 50. all depends on how you want to make power and then you could see what the best way to build your d series would be

you going to boost or NA?

For boost, Ive read that the a6 bottom end with z6 head is a good route, something about the a6 bottom end is a little stronger than the z6 Not sure if it is true or not.

For NA, there's some crazy piston combinations out there to get high compression...

There's also people making good power with d16y5 heads, there's always 1.7's stroked...

haha yea i know eaxactly what you mean about the 6TH gear! but i just dropped 638$ on a edm d15b trans that came oem from honda with LSD rare find but i snagged it up

anywho ya i wanna stay with a all motor i love all motor and even tho i have done turbo its just not my can of worms.

i wanna keep my z6 and throw some d15b7 pistons in cause those give it 10.7:1CR according to zealaurowerks and thats plenty for a street car. the p29 pistons give it some where in the 11's i beleive and they hard to find as where b7's are a dime a dozen lol.

so my plan was to put the b7 pistons outta my bros motor in my z6 with a mild cam cause he is thinkin about making the swap to a z6 or a jdm d15b in a couple weeks. i just wanna have somewhat more motor than every average joe with a ex civic.

but before i did all this i wanted to see if there are different d-series you can frankestien to make a better machine...from what im seeing the z6 with different internals is the way to go

For a stock engine, the obd2 JDM d15b is probally the best D Series engine ever built. Even the obd1 version has a better torque curve then the d16z6.

if your making a hybrid it would depend on what you are going for, Boost as teal said a d16a6 bottom end is stronger. However best D for boost would be a d16z6(or equvalent jdm d15b, zc vtec) with Forged Rods and Vitara pistons. this is a better route for a bigger turbo.

If your going to rock low boost, having ls rods and stock d16z6 pistons would be better then going with vitaras as you have less power to make up. Going this roue will be cheaper but will limit you in higher boost applications. if you have a small turbo this would be a good route to go.

For n/a as teal said there are tons of paths. Putting High Comp pistons under a z6 head and maybe stroking to 1.7 with the d17 pistons(higher piston) and a d17crank.

My old plan for a low boost d series was a d15z1 block, with ls rods, z6 pistons, z6 head with slight port/polish and a stage 1 or 2 n/a cam on low boost from a small turbo. This will be a good engine for auto cross/ mountain runs. and be super quick to spool. These plans ended when I sold my Purple Coupe.

ok i just double checked and zeal says b7 pistons in a z6 equal 11:7:1 CR. thats a lil high for what i want be anyhow

how wouold i go about strokin my motor to 1.7?

basically what i need to is sit on zealautowerks and just experiment for a couple hours huh? lol but yea boost is out the question i want somethihg reliable like my basically stock z6 buit with some more power than every average civic lol

Using a D17 crank in a D16:

D17 Crank = 94.4 mm stroke
D17 Rods = 137mm
D17 Pistons = 27mm compression height

You need to use the D17 oil pump because the snout on the crank is much thicker then the y8 crank. No problem because it actually bolts on like a champ. Problem, there is no accommodation for a dip stick, the y8 pump has a hole in it for the dipstick the d17's pump does not.

The D17 rods are thinner at the crank end than D16 rods, so some machining may be needed depending on the rod you use.

im usin a d16z6 so would i still have no dipsitck? and according to zeal i would be able to throw in a d17 crank with d16 con rods and pistons and have 11.33:1 cr if it works like that

not sure on how to make a dip stick work.

the b18a/b, d16's, JDM d15b, ZC VTEC, DOHC ZC, d15z1 and d17 all have 137mm Rods. The d15z1 rods are few mm smaller on the crank end (43mm vs 45mm i believe)

your calculations are correct, However if you notice the Piston to deck height, your pistons will go .087" Above the top of your deck. thats 2.2mm, You will need to make sure your ring isn't going above your deck as well otherwise you will loose your rings, and thus your compression.

Looking over this agian it meantions using a B16 Rod and a Toyota Supra Pistons to get a near perfect 1.49 rod/stroke Ratio. For a N/A Application this with a lightened flywheel and cams, this would make a good high revving setup.

so i would be able tto put b16a rods in my d16 with no problems or is there machining required? also the supra pistons sounds kinda fishy but at the time where would i go about gettiung these? what year supra they out of and what motor.

i didnt really wanna tear the whole motor apart but im exploring options right now

i think im gonna go wit puttin the pm3 (d15b7 pistons in my d16z6 and a mild cam with a b7 head gasket to keep the CR 11.36:1

that pretty strong for my DD i need to be able to drive it on my 4 hour trips to LA and SAC.

anyhow will the b7 HG fit a z6 with no problems?
also can i put my z6 piston rings on the b7 pistons cause the rings have maybe 1000miles on it and the b7 pistons have almopst 300k on em lol.

and will the b7 pistons fit the z6 rods no problem?

just trying to cover all my basis before i do this i only wanna spend maybe 2 days doing this completly

1.7 liter stroker built for boost or for all motor. Still using all stock oem parts.
