Go figure! Another "Burning Oil" Question...

- Sat Oct 08, 2011 6:05 pm #276805 Okay guys, I browsed around the D-Series forum to see if I could gather any info or if people were having my problem or not, but I couldnt find anything. So here goes!

So I bought this car almost a month ago at this point, the previous owner has the Air-Care papers showing the emissions of the car, which is little to none. According to him, he had done the test about a month before I bought the car.

Not to say the dudes a liar, but I mean, my car burns HELLA oil. Like crazy amounts. But it only burns when I drive it past 5K-6K RPM. And generally, only in second gear? :S

My question is, WHY DOES IT BURN. HOW DO I FIX IT! DOES ANYONE HAVE/HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST?


Oh, and if I didn't look hard enough in the Forum, would you be able to me to somewhere that has the answer!

more like go figure! a d series doing what d series do best :lol:

sounds like your rings are bad. you could just live with it or you could fork out some dough and have them replaced. if it has high miles or has been poorly maintained rings probably arent the only problem with the engine.

Well from what the previous owners told me, the car was "well maintained" Considering it's a 92 and had 240K (241K now) when I bought it, I didn't think it was in all that bad shape. My dads 95 DX has 247K and runs like a champ. I'm jealous... :cry:

How much is it going to cost me to get the rings done?

- Sun Oct 09, 2011 10:01 am #276886 Don't get jealous yet. Aside from burning oil does it run ok? I ended up in the same situation. Mine barely made it home. It took a timing belt adjustment, valve adjustment, ignition timing adjustment, tappet cover gasket, throttle body gasket, 2 tie rods, a radiator, muffler, and a fuel filter before mine ran worth a crap.

Anyway, if it runs good but uses some oil I would'nt replace an engine over $5 a month in oil. Just keep your rpms lower uless you have to pass someone or get on the interstate. It's not hard, it's called "daily driving".

Overall, I would say the car runs great. No strange sounds comming from anywhere. Just the overall oil consumption is huge. I was running full synthetic oil that my mechanic put in, he put more in on purpose, and I burned through it in less than two weeks. Im not taking the synthetic approach anymore :thumbdown:

and just think... if it burns roughly a quart of oil every thousand miles or and your filling it back up the car is changing its own oil :lol:

- Mon Oct 10, 2011 3:47 am #277001 i have the same problem :bs: ...but just to tell you how im handling the situation....i add oil any where from 1-3 times a month depending on my driving that month...and im just dealing with it till i have the money to finish my ls swap...now idk if yu plan on swapping anytime soon but...thats the easiest and most practical solution IMO :thumb:

- Mon Oct 10, 2011 4:23 pm #277063 Check your PCV valve. seriously, i just replaced mine and it was the cause of my oil consumption besides my valve seals. Im going to be getting my motor refreshed since its got 240,xxxkm on it(its a canadian car) or 150k miles(give or take). I'll be doing Rings,Bearings,Head gasket, Timing belt, and Water pump. After that the car may see boost.

They had a Jetta wagon as a daily driver. They were a family of 3 and worked very close to where they lived. They only drove my car when it rained, and even then, it was less than 2KM from where they lived. What do you guys think?

I am actually planning on swapping at some point. Although that probably wont be happening to late next year since I'm still a student..and I have alot of loans to pay :thumbdown:

yea i hear yu...but im not even a student and still have loans to pay -__- ....but im sure yu have it worse than i do cuz mine are from family members who wont up my rates if im late by a week lol

- Tue Oct 11, 2011 7:40 am #277207 Ok fun fact, Honda spec state that a single cam v-tec engine will burn a quart of oil every 900 miles, I was told this when i had my 98 and it locked up 60k on the clock.

But with the miles you have on the car this is not abnormal. You most likely have bad valve guides and when you start taking it up into v-tec it will push oil passed the guides. Does it smoke when you first start it up as well?

The oil pressure rises when it goes into v-tec around 5k and as mine does the same thing. I put a quart in about once a month possibly more depending on how much highway driving I do.

But it could also be rings as well. Do a compression check and a leak down and post the results. it will show if there is any blow by on the head or the pistons. To fix it your looking at rebuild or replace the motor. Most likely the simple thing to do is put another single cam in it. with lower miles.

My car doesn't smoke when I start it up. It never has since i've owned it. It only smokes when I go heavy on the throttle. My engine isnt a Vtec either though, its a DX :cry: lol. I'm just worried that I'll start the car one day and a nice plume of thick white smoke will come out of my car..
