Im currently looking at a civic for sale near me and the person selling it is saying when it goes into vtec (5500rpm+) that he has noticed it burns alot of oil.

Just wondering if the problem is serious and what causes this ?

- Mon May 05, 2008 1:22 am #53821 Valve stem seals or piston rings seem to be the most common causes - can be expensive to fix if you're paying someone to do it but the actual parts arent much at all

- Tue May 06, 2008 7:09 pm #54067 mine did the same thing, does your vtec sputter or anything? i have a dented oil pan which is causing a loss of oil pressure, which in turn causes vtec to not activate, which in turn burns oil. just throwing that out there.

- Wed May 07, 2008 12:48 am #54090 When you say its burning oil, do you mean its smoking under high RPM's, or just the oil level drops after a lil while??

- Wed May 07, 2008 1:00 am #54093 If you're running around banging VTEC alot, oil will burn off. I get about a quart low after about 1000 miles of hard driving. I guess thats the price you pay to have a high revving engine.

If there's no smoke, you're all good.
