#81833 looking to do major bodywork on my car, i wanna replace the old rusted rear fenders with new ones, but i do not have a welder, or intend to get one anytime soon. i was wondering if there was another way i could attach the new replacements. i heard special glues could be used, i was wondering what glues will be be worthy on a honda ;) and stand the test of time

#81935 Get it welded, and you won't be disappointed.. Using glue on the metal would just do it temporarily, go weld it for a better grip..

#81989 ya do not use glue. i work at a body shop in elk grove ca and you would be stupid to use clue. no offence. but if you were to get rear ended lets just say the clue wont hold and crunch. your glued on quarter panels are in the front. go to a shop and have the pros do it. it requires a sertent amount of spot welds to hold it on. you got to pull out your glass, and tear down the ass end and ya just get it done at a shop. dont just glue or atempt to weld if ya never done it befor.

#81994 You can get glues specifically for this that bond the metal and will be as strong as a weld, i dont know where you get them though!!

#82035 ya there is glue. do it glue it on. called panel bonding adhesive. made by 3m. see how long it lasts. so when your doing sharp turns you can feel it twist. last time i used clue for something like that was a rc car. the stuff is welded for a reason otherwise everything would be glued on. would you glue on a radiator support? dought it! :thumb:

#82089 Some new cars are being manufactured using glues in place of welds - alot of benefits over welding. Im guessing the car that your friend had done was a while back as theres stuff nowadays that is equally as strong as a weld, but as i said i dont know where you get it or if its even available to the public!!

We had a lecture on the topic last year, i was surprised just how strong the bonds were :o If you think about it a quarter panel is only held in place with a series of spotwelds, there's no reason the panel couldnt be bonded in place and be equally as strong providing you can get the right stuff

If you do find anymore on the subject id be interested in hearing about it too!!!

so a few new questions:
what kind of welder would be best? or cheapest for the job?
how long will it take you repair my rear quarters?
how difficult will it be? (keep in mind, i have little bodywork experience)

#83825 ok for the welder you may want to go to a local welding supply and see if it possible to rent one. if not at least ask them to direct you to the best bang for your buck.

as for the difficulty i would say its hard. body shop manuel says bout 8 hours per side. you have to pull out the rear glass, remove the rear bumper and deck lid, and all the lights and trunk interior and the rear seat and package tray. then you have to cut the quarter panel and splice it were the new panel meets. you also have to cut the inner door area buy the rear door latch. okok. if you have never done this befor i recomend you get a pro to do it. spliceing in a quarter panel and making it fit right will be a bitch. since your trying to do both you have to dest fit the trunk and bumper to make sure all your gaps are good. i mean you may end up cutting and pulling this car apart and not being a experiance body tec you could end up ruining you car. unless you have done this dont try it. i mean its up to you. get a body repair guied and read it.or search online. but look at the big picture. you could spend 1,200 and have a shop due it if ya got the parts. or you can do it your self. lets say you will probably have a day to remove all the sstuff, a day to cut out panels and a full2 days just to put them on and mabey star welding, day of prep, day of paint, day of reassemble and dont for get how long it will take to test fit and test fit till its right.plus 300 for a welder, and the supplies, time and sweet.plus if you get any mosture behind the new panel you have potental for rust. have to use a weld threw primer. it will take at least a week to a week1/2. and thats working on it for 8 hours a day. no one can just tell you how to do it. thats why body tecs eather learn from a family trade, or go to school. up to you. good luck. if you can do it i would love to see pics of how you did it.
